Which states had the most shootings in 2023?

In May, parents in the village of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, received a horrific message from their children’s school: there would be a shooting on campus.

But unlike tragedies in Newton, Connecticut, and Uvalde, Texas, police managed to stop the shooting before it started. They shot and killed an armed boy outside the school, but no one else was injured.

The near-miss is one of dozens of incidents the FBI defines as “active shootings” in the U.S. While such incidents can lead to mass shootings, the FBI also tracks the disasters that are prevented.

In a new report on mass shootings in the United States, the agency found that while the number of mass shootings in 2023 decreased slightly from the previous year, more people were killed in mass shootings than in 2022.

There were 48 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2023, compared to 50 in 2022. However, 105 people were killed in mass shootings in 2023, compared to 100 such killings in 2022, the FBI said.

Where in the US did shootings occur?

California had the most shootings in the United States, followed by Texas.

According to the FBI, an active shooter is defined as “one or more persons who are actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.”

Last year, shootings were reported in 26 states. In California, eight shootings were reported, killing 47 people. Maine had the highest number of casualties in a shooting incident last year, with 18 people killed and 13 others injured.

The active shootings identified by the FBI do not involve self-defense, gang violence, drug-related violence, residential or family disputes, or hostage situations.

The report does not include cases in which a shooter injured himself or shootings that were the result of another, unrelated crime.

Where did shootings occur?

The FBI found that 28 of the 48 shootings occurred in open areas, such as urban areas or parks.

More people have been killed in mall shootings than any other location. According to the FBI, about 130 people were killed or injured in 14 mall shootings in 2023.

Different definitions of mass shootings

It is important to note that the definition of mass shootings varies, and other groups’ death tolls differ greatly from those reported by the FBI.

For example, the FBI reported that 103 people were killed in mass shootings in 2021. However, an online database called the Gun Violence Archive, which defines mass shootings as those with four or more victims, found that 706 people were killed in such attacks in 2021, according to the Pew Research Center.

Gun violence declared a national health crisis

Last month, the U.S. Surgeon General declared gun violence a public health crisis and issued a recommendation on initiatives to prevent firearm deaths. The recommendation said that the number of firearm deaths “reached a nearly three-decade high in 2021.”

According to U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, more than 48,000 people died from gun violence in 2022, 16,000 more than in 2010. At the same time, the number of suicides by firearms has increased by 20%, including a “frightening increase” in such deaths among young people, the statement said.
