Public urged to be vigilant after several homemade explosive devices were found in Worcester – Boston 25 News

WORCESTER – After several homemade explosive devices were found in Worcester, authorities are warning the public to remain vigilant ahead of Fourth of July celebrations.

On June 19, a small explosion occurred in the area of 185 Madison St., Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early said in a statement.

Investigators found fireworks, a butane gas can and projectiles at the scene, Early said.

Two other unexploded devices constructed from similar materials and placed in coolers were also found in Worcester last month, Early said.

As authorities continue their investigation, they ask the public to be alert to unattended items, especially coolers.

Citizens who see suspicious items “are asked to call 911,” Early said.

“Do not attempt to tamper with these items. Instead, call the authorities immediately,” Early said.

State Fire Commissioner Jon Davine warned against making homemade explosives.

“Massachusetts residents have suffered serious injuries while attempting to make homemade explosive devices,” Davine said. “These explosive devices are illegal and potentially deadly.”

The Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, the Worcester Police and Fire Departments, and Early’s office are currently investigating the explosive devices.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates as more information becomes available.
