Investigation continues after 1 man shot dead after allegedly pointing gun at Dayton police

One person is dead after being shot by Dayton police Saturday night after they allegedly pointed a gun at them.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11 a.m. on SaturdayAccording to a statement posted on social media, Dayton Police officers responded to a “problem involving a vacant house/street party in the middle of the street in the 500 block of Negley Place.”

They arrived at the crime scene on Saturday around 8 p.m.

As officers approached, they found that a person allegedly had a weapon.

Dayton Police Chief Kamran Afzal told News Center 7’s Malik Patterson that a man ran away from officers, then turned around and allegedly pointed a gun at them.

Two officers shot the man, the department said.

They began to provide “medical assistance” to the person. Paramedics took the person to the hospital where he died.

The Dayton chapter of the NAACP also released a statement after Saturday’s shooting, saying the person killed was a teenager.

The Dayton NAACP branch is aware and has been on the scene interviewing witnesses to this police-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a teenager in Dayton, Ohio. We will be thoroughly investigating this case in the coming days and requesting body camera footage to see where the evidence leads us in finding out the truth in this case. Our sincere condolences go out to the family of the deceased.

News Center 7 is working to confirm both the age and name of the person killed in Saturday’s shooting.

Patterson also met with Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims, Dayton Police Chief Kamran Afzal and other local officials at Begley Place.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the criminal investigation and the Dayton Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau will conduct a separate administrative investigation.
