Drunk man crashes into car and injures woman

JONESBORO, Arkansas (KAIT) – Police have arrested a man who allegedly drove his car into another driver, injuring him.

On Monday, June 24, Craighead County District Judge Tommy Fowler found there was probable cause to charge 22-year-old Mario Conells Burks with the following:

  • Second degree battery
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Reckless driving
  • Improper conduct
  • Rejection of submission

According to the affidavit, Jonesboro police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Highland Drive and Arch Street shortly after midnight on Sunday, June 23, for a car crash.

When officers arrived, they approached Mario Burks, who appeared to be intoxicated.

Officers noticed that Burks had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and smelled of drugs. Officers also said Burks’ face was bleeding.

Burks reportedly told police to “lock him up” and said, “It was my fault.”

Police noticed a destroyed Dodge Challenger and a Ford Mustang nearby.

The affidavit states that a woman was trapped in the Mustang and that firefighters had to free her from the car.

The Challenger was unoccupied, police said.

A bystander told police he saw the crash and told officers the Challenger was traveling east on Highland Drive when it crossed the center line into westbound traffic and struck the Mustang head-on. The witness said Burks was driving the Challenger.

Another witness told police that Burks was the “sole occupant” of the Challenger.

The woman who was freed from the Mustang was examined on site by emergency services and then flown by helicopter to Regional One Hospital in Memphis because of her injuries.

Burks was arrested but refused a breathalyzer test and was taken to St. Bernards where a blood test was performed to determine his level of intoxication.

“While in the hospital, Burks continued to yell obscenities within earshot of the public, despite police officers telling him to stop several times,” the affidavit states.

Burks was later taken to the Craighead County Detention Center and held on $25,000 cash or surety bail.

His next court date is scheduled for August 23.
