Minneapolis police release bodycam video of shooting that killed Officer Jamal Mitchell

On Friday, Minneapolis police released bodycam footage from two recent deadly violence incidents: the May 30 shooting that killed Officer Jamal Mitchell and the June 12 shooting of an armed suspect.

Shooting of Officer Jamal Mitchell on May 30 and MPD response

A video of the May 30 incident shows Mitchell arriving at the scene of a reported shooting near the intersection of 22nd Street and Blaisdell Avenue.

“It looks like we have at least two bleeding victims out there,” Mitchell announces over the radio before getting out of his squad.

The shooter, 35-year-old Mustafa Mohamed, is apparently lying injured on the ground in the street.

“Who shot you? Who shot you?” Mitchell asks before pulling on blue latex gloves and preparing to administer first aid. “Are there any victims in the house?” he asks, pointing toward a nearby apartment building.

The video then shows Mohamed pulling out a gun. The footage ends before the suspect shoots Mitchell.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara appeared close to tears as he watched the footage of his fallen colleague.

“Officer Mitchell did not have a chance to draw his gun,” O’Hara said during a press conference. “My goal in releasing the video up to this point was to provide some context as to what he got himself into.”

O’Hara says Mitchell did what he was trained to do: help those in need.

“He was attacked and murdered quite suddenly and without provocation,” said the chief.

A second video captures Officer Luke Kittock’s perspective as he arrives at the scene minutes later, after Mustafa has already shot at the police officers, a firefighter and several others.

Kittock exits a patrol car with a rifle in his hand as sirens sound and 911 calls report that the suspect is “actively shooting” in the area. Civilians taking cover behind a parked SUV point Kittock and other officers in the direction of the shooter.

Kittock and Officer Nicholas Kapinos fire several shots at Mustafa’s location before running, taking cover behind a wall, and continuing to advance as Mustafa lay on the ground. Mustafa was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Mustafa had shot two people in a residential building before Mitchell arrived. Osman Said Jimale, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mohamed Bashir Aden, 36, died a week later.

Shooting of Michael Ristow on June 12

A second series of bodycam clips shows police officers shooting 39-year-old Michael Warren Ristow on the night of June 12.

Police initially received a report of a person armed with a gun and talking to himself near the intersection of 29th Avenue South and Lake Street. A few minutes later, another call came in reporting an armed man waving a gun and acting strangely in the 3400 block of Hiawatha Avenue.

Bodycam video from Minneapolis police officers Chaz Wilson, Enoch Langford and Abdirizaq Mumin shows officers making contact with Ristow and telling him, “Police! Stop! You’re under arrest!” before he runs off south on Hiawatha.

Officers pursue him, and eventually Ristow is forced against a chain-link fence. Langford is the first to reach Ristow, shows his colleagues the gun, and yells at Ristow to drop the weapon.

At one point, Ristow appears to turn toward the police with his gun drawn. The officers then open fire. Police say Ristow’s gun jammed when officers recovered it.

All three officers who fired shots in Ristow are on vacation. None of them were injured.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating both use of force cases.
