Apple reportedly stops work on Vision Pro 2

Apple has stopped work on the second generation of the Vision Pro headset to focus exclusively on a cheaper model. The information reports.

Apple Vision Pro 2, Feature 2
Apple was widely believed to be planning to split its Vision line into two models, a “Pro” model and a lower-cost standard model. The company is said to have lowered the priority of the next Vision Pro headset over the past year and gradually allocated fewer staff to the project.

Apple initially focused on reducing the cost of components in the first model and developing an improved display for the next model. Now, the company has apparently told at least one of its suppliers that it has stopped working on the next generation of its Vision Pro headset. It is continuing to work on a cheaper “Vision” product with fewer features.

The company is said to have started working on a cheaper Vision device, codenamed “N109,” in 2022. The goal is to sell this model at around the same price as a high-end iPhone, which retails for up to $1,600. When Apple began working on the device, it wanted to launch it in late 2024, but there was no firm prototype earlier this year. The company is said to have been looking for ways to reduce the cost of the model without sacrificing too many features, meaning it will likely go beyond the revised late 2025 release date.

Apple apparently wants to keep the high-end display components of the Vision Pro in the low-cost model, which are among the most expensive components in the device. MacRumors As previously reported, the cheaper model will have the same high-end displays as the Vision Pro, but with fewer cameras, a simpler headband, and smaller speakers. Apple also wants to make its cheaper headset at least a third lighter than the Vision Pro.

A supplier that makes key components for the Vision Pro apparently cut its production by 50% in May after receiving a forecast from Apple that predicted weaker demand than expected. Information from that supplier suggests that Apple has produced no more than 500,000 Vision Pro units this year and has no plans to produce significantly more than that number until August.

The information says it’s still possible that Apple will resume work on a second-generation Vision Pro headset sometime in the future.
