71-year-old man found dead in his apartment on Father’s Day, stepson arrested and identified as suspect, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An investigation was launched Sunday morning in west Houston after a 71-year-old man was found dead in a home, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD officers arrived at the 4300 block of W. 34th Street at an apartment complex just before 6 a.m.

Units forced their way into apartment number 19 and discovered the victim dead upon arrival. Police say it appears someone beat the man to death.

Within an hour, investigators found a suspect and identified him as the victim’s stepson, who was arrested about a mile from the scene.

Authorities said he is currently being questioned. Officials did not say whether there was a motive.

Sgt. Michael Cass of the homicide division said it’s not something you want to see on a day like this.

“It’s really sad to see this, especially on Father’s Day,” he said.
