Alabama man pleads guilty to 2022 kidnapping and rape of 75-year-old woman found bound in closet

A Calhoun County man has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of kidnapping and raping a 75-year-old woman in 2022. In July 2022, 75-year-old Betty Cobb, a woman reported missing in Anniston, was found bound with duct tape in the closet of a home connected to Tony White, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. Cobb had reportedly just returned to her home on Choccolocco Road from a grocery store trip when White arrived and forced her into the trunk of his car at knifepoint. Officials at the time said Cobb’s family members called 911 around 1:20 p.m. to report her missing when they couldn’t find her anywhere on her property, but her car was in the driveway and her phone and keys were in the house. Investigators say that after the kidnapping, White drove Cobb to his home, where he sexually assaulted her multiple times before tying her to a chair in the closet, where she was later found. White was later arrested in Kentucky after an extensive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies.>> WVTM 13 ON THE GO: Download our app for freeWhite is also linked to several unsolved cases in central Alabama, including the 2013 rape of a 67-year-old woman in Talladega County.Talladega County Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore said White is charged with burglary, sodomy and rape in connection with the assault on the woman. Kilgore said the charges were filed after investigators matched White’s DNA profile to DNA collected at the scene of Cobb’s rape.On Tuesday, White pleaded guilty to rape, kidnapping and two counts of sodomy in connection with the Cobb case. His sentencing is set for July 26.

A Calhoun County man has pleaded guilty to several counts related to the 2022 kidnapping and rape of a 75-year-old woman.

In July 2022, 75-year-old Betty Cobb, a woman reported missing in Anniston, was found bound with duct tape in the closet of a residence associated with Tony White, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Cobb had reportedly just returned to her home on Choccolocco Road from a grocery store when White showed up and, at knifepoint, dragged her into the trunk of his car.

Officials at the time said members of Cobb’s family called 911 around 1:20 p.m. to report her missing when they could not find her anywhere on her property, but her car was in the driveway and her phone and keys were in the house.

Investigators say that after the kidnapping, White drove Cobb to his home, where he sexually assaulted her several times and then tied her to a chair in the closet where she was later found.

White was later captured after an extensive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies in Kentucky.

White is also linked to several unsolved cases in central Alabama, including the rape of a 67-year-old woman in Talladega County in 2013.

Talladega County Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore said White will be charged with burglary, sodomy and rape in connection with the attack on the woman. Kilgore said the charges came after investigators matched White’s DNA profile to DNA collected at the scene of Cobb’s rape.

On Tuesday, White pleaded guilty to rape, kidnapping and two counts of sodomy in connection with the Cobb case. His sentencing is scheduled for July 26.
