Merrillville man killed in shooting at gas station

A Merrillville man was shot and killed at a gas station in Gary early Monday morning.

Christian Farmer, 21, of the 600 block of E. 54th Place, was pronounced dead at the Citgo gas station, 4700 Broadway, around 2 a.m. June 10, according to a news release from the Lake County coroner’s office Tuesday. Family members identified him, the news release said.

Farmer’s death was ruled a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds, the press release said.

As the Post-Tribune previously reported, the gas station was the scene of additional shootings.

In September 2023, a Gary teenager was charged after allegedly shooting a father who was trying to get back his son’s stolen bike. Xavier Maypray, 18, was charged with two counts of assault and is scheduled to go to trial in September 2024.

In another incident, Chicago man Larry Boston claimed self-defense after shooting a friend as they argued on their way back from a barbershop on July 8, 2020. However, he was convicted of murder and armed robbery with a weapons enhancement in 2022.
