(KRON) – Fairfield Fire Department found a woman and her dog dead Friday after they became trapped in the back of their home during a residential fire, fire officials said.

According to Fairfield authorities, the fire broke out around 1 a.m. Friday in the 200 block of Stephen Street. When firefighters arrived, they found a one-story, single-family home “with widespread fire” in the back of the house, with thick smoke billowing toward the front of the house, the Fairfield Fire Department said.

The fire was then upgraded to a second alarm, and all Fairfield Fire Department units were called to the home, where they eventually extinguished the fire, officials said.

During their initial search, firefighters found the woman trapped in the back of the house and pronounced dead at the scene. A dead dog was also found behind the house. Two other residents and a cat escaped the fire unharmed, firefighters said.

According to the Fairfield Fire Department, the fire is still under investigation, but authorities believe it was an accident.

The Red Cross is currently housing the two residents left homeless by the fire, the Fairfield Fire Department said.

According to the fire department, the fire caused more than $250,000 in damage to the building and its contents.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the victim and his family,” said Fairfield Fire Chief John Sturdee.
