Family mourns woman killed in Dale Mabry crash. Police say street racer is responsible.

A Tampa family is mourning the death of a woman who died Monday when police say a man struck her car while racing on Dale Mabry Highway.

Tampa police said Marsha “Linda” Strickland, 63, died in the crash. Police arrested 22-year-old Andy Moya Robaina on a charge of negligent homicide and are still trying to find the other driver they collided with.

Linda Strickland was in the car with her husband, 74-year-old Thomas Strickland. Thomas Strickland suffered serious injuries. Linda Strickland died in hospital.

The couple had been married for 25 years. They were heading home Monday morning after having breakfast at Mom’s Place, a family favorite, according to their son Tommy Strickland.

“Of course we’re angry at him, he killed our mother,” said Tommy Strickland. He says his family plans to hire a lawyer to file a lawsuit against him.

The accident occurred at about 10:25 a.m. Monday when Tampa police were called to the intersection of North Dale Mabry Highway and West South Avenue for a report of a two-vehicle crash, Tampa police said in a news release.

According to court documents, Robaina was driving a 2011 BMW 335i “at a high rate of speed,” estimated at 80 miles per hour, alongside another vehicle south on Dale Mabry in what witnesses said appeared to be a race.

A witness told police that the two speeding cars cut her off by suddenly changing lanes. She said the cars were traveling faster than the other cars around them.

Video obtained by Tampa police shows a 2015 Nissan Versa crossing the southbound lanes of North Dale Mabry Highway near West South Avenue as two black cars travel south at a high rate of speed.

Robaina’s BMW struck the Nissan in the inside lane and eventually came to a stop in the northbound lane of Dale Mabry, police said.

“He showed no remorse at the scene. According to investigators, he even denied that anything had happened,” said Tommy Strickland.

Tommy Strickland said his family is focused on supporting their father during his recovery.

“He has been discharged from intensive care, but he still has a long road ahead of him. He is grieving the loss of his wife. It has been difficult to deal with, but we are getting through this,” he said.

He said his father is recovering from broken ribs, a bruised shoulder blade, bruises and cuts all over his body.

“Whatever, he’s recovering from it,” Tommy Strickland said.

According to police, Robaina was alone in the BMW and reported no injuries. He remained at the scene of the accident, the press release states.

Investigators believe Robaina was racing the driver of a dark-colored vehicle that “narrowly missed” the Nissan and continued south on Dale Mabry. The driver of the vehicle did not stop or return to the scene of the accident, the news release said.

The Strickland family plans to offer a reward for more information about the other driver.

Robaina was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and illegal racing on a highway. He is being held without bail at the Falkenburg Road Jail.

According to court records, he has received citations in Hillsborough County since 2020 for speeding, failure to stay in designated lane, disobeying a stop sign, failure to display proof of insurance and driving without a valid license.

Police are working to identify the driver of the dark-colored vehicle. Anyone with information can call the Tampa Police Department’s non-emergency line at 813-231-6130 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 800-873-8477.
