Man found dead after standoff in northeast Columbia – SWAT team and armored vehicles needed

COLUMBIA, Missouri (KMIZ)

Police found a man dead in an apartment in northeast Columbia after a standoff that lasted more than eight hours and included shots fired at police officers.

Columbia police spokeswoman Jenny Hopper said shortly after noon that the scene was cleared after officers entered the apartment and found the man dead. Police have not yet identified him.

The discovery was the culmination of a standoff involving the Columbia Police Department’s SWAT team and crisis negotiation teams that began around 3:40 a.m.

In a press release, the department said it responded to a report of a shooting in the 5000 block of Clark Lane, The Links apartment complex.

Hopper said police came under fire when they arrived at the scene.

An ABC 17 News crew on the scene saw about 15 to 16 CPD and Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicles, along with police tape and a drone. Bearcat armored vehicles were also in use.

The CPD Bearcat was damaged by gunfire, Hopper said. Two other highway patrol Bearcats were on scene.

A truck from the Missouri State Highway Patrol bomb disposal squad was on the scene.
