Tea police confirm one person killed in Monday’s shooting – Mitchell Republic

TEA, SD – One person was killed and another is in custody in Tea following a shooting earlier this week.

Shortly before 11:45 a.m. on Monday, June 3, officers from the Tea Police Department were dispatched to the 2200 block of North Carla Avenue for a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, authorities found an adult male with a gunshot wound. The victim received medical attention but died of his injuries at the scene.

In a statement Tuesday confirming the shooting victim’s death, Tea Island police said they had identified Timothy Overton as a suspect in an aggravated domestic violence investigation that occurred May 1, according to court records.

Although the agency acknowledged in its statement that Overton was arrested in connection with the investigation into the attack, it did not address whether investigators also hold him responsible for the shooting.

Overton is currently being held without bail in the Minnehaha County Jail. He is charged with two counts of aggravated domestic assault and six counts of simple domestic assault.

It is unclear how the assault investigation is connected to the shooting investigation, and as of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been filed against Overton in connection with the June 3 shooting.

Tea Island police declined to release further details about the fatal shooting or Overton’s arrest, citing the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation.

“No further details will be released until multiple witness interviews and evidence gathering are complete,” the agency said in a statement. “We ask for patience as thorough investigations take time and involve multiple agencies and witnesses.”

The city police department is investigating the shooting with assistance from sheriff’s offices in Lincoln and Turner counties, as well as the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the state’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Overton is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday on the domestic violence charge.
