Dog attacked with machete in Sancti Spíritus shows promising recovery

After being rescued by a group of animal rights activists, Yeiko, a dog, was found by a man in Holy Spiritshows promising signs of recovery. ARCA Foundation in Sancti Spíritus shared pictures on Facebook this Saturday showing how the dog is being cared for and is recovering successfully.

“It is incredible how much Yeiko’s condition has improved; the wound is almost healed and he behaves very well during the treatments,” the organization noted, continuing the story of this dog who was the victim of a cruel and violent act. “Come on, Yeiko, you can do it, you’re almost there,” ARCA encouraged him, sharing pictures of the dog with his owner, who found him after his rescue and surgery.

Last Thursday, the organization also posted on Facebook that the dog had been bathed: “There was no way to get a better photo, it seems like he didn’t like it very much,” they noted. The photo shows the dog with an exposed wound, but he looks healthy and active.

On May 20, the ARCA Foundation learned of a violent incident in which a man attacked a dog with a machete. “While everyone was sleeping, our foundation suffered alongside the medical team who fought tirelessly to save Yeiko’s life,” they stated on Facebook, condemning the gruesome crime.

As a result of the violence, the dog had to undergo over 50 stitches during surgery for severe head injuries, including an exposed eye that was eventually lost, and a broken jaw. However, thanks to the efforts of animal rights activists and Yeiko’s family, this dog’s story will have a happy ending.

Unfortunately, many animals are currently disappearing in Cuba, which is suffering from the worst economic crisis in decades, and are never found again. Recently, an animal rights activist identified himself on social media as Miriela Ramos Lopez warned that in some areas HavanaCats have disappeared, suggesting that they may have been eaten. “I want to issue a warning; two days ago in Playa, near the La Puntilla store, there was not a single cat to be seen, neither stray nor pet,” she stressed in the Facebook group “Society for the Protection of Animals in Cuba”.
