Driver killed after crashing into tree and catching fire in east Houston

HOUSTON – A driver died Thursday morning after authorities said his vehicle crashed into a tree in east Houston, starting a fire.

Details are limited because this is an active investigation, but police say the crash happened shortly after 3:15 a.m. on Turning Basin on Route 610. That’s where the driver identified was heading north, but for undisclosed reasons, authorities say the driver left the road before hitting a tree.

Moments later, officers found the vehicle covered in flames, with the driver’s body still inside.

No additional details were shared, so it’s unclear what caused the crash, but authorities have closed the entire north side of the highway while the investigation continues.
