The Ocean Beach community is holding a memorial service for surfer Callum Robinson, who was killed in Mexico

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – Dozens of community members came together over the weekend to honor one of the surfers recently killed in Mexico. A memorial paddle for Callum Robinson was held in Ocean Beach on Saturday afternoon.

Two Australian brothers, Callum and Jake Robinson, and their American boyfriend Jack Carter Rhoad went missing on April 27 during a surfing trip in Ensenada, Mexico.

While Callum Robinson was from Australia, his roots were in San Diego.

On Saturday, dozens of his lacrosse teammates and fellow surfers gathered in Ocean Beach for a paddling excursion to celebrate his life.

“You couldn’t be around Callum Robinson and not be so happy and full of passion,” said Sam Cunard, organizer and lacrosse teammate. “This guy brought energy to everything he did and we’re going to miss him, we’re going to miss him a lot.”

The three surfers died while camping in La Bocana, Mexico. Their bodies were found in a nearby well. According to Mexican authorities, the victims were shot after an attempt was made to steal their truck for its tires.

After a prayer for Callum, his brother and Rhoad, family and friends grabbed their boards and paddled out into the water on Saturday.

“To remember our great friend Callum, we are trying to come together as a community and do some of the things we enjoyed doing with him. One of his favorite things to do was… do a little surfing and just spend time with friends.”

Once in the water, the group splashed in the air for 10 seconds, remembering the number he wore on his lacrosse jersey.

Daniel Dickson was out in the water to show Callum his love and support. “I’m glad the surfing community stood up for him,” he said. “I’m glad they were able to show their respect to the family and remember him in this way.”

Three suspects are in custody in the case and the investigation is still ongoing.
