A bomb threat investigation is underway at the South Hadley school

SOUTH HADLEY, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A bomb threat forced the evacuation of Michael E. Smith Middle School in South Hadley Friday morning. Out of an abundance of caution, these middle school students were taken across the street to Mosier Elementary School.

Due to the current situation, it was decided to send middle school students home for the day while elementary school students stay the rest of the day. South Hadley Interim School Superintendent Mark McLaughlin told us the evacuation was due to a reported threat written on the boy’s bathroom stall at the middle school.

“We are very concerned and disappointed that this has happened and we will be working very closely with police as it is a serious incident that requires investigation,” McLaughlin said.

South Hadley Police Chief Jennifer Gunderson added in a statement in part: “This is the second threat this week at Michael E. Smith Middle School.” The school was evacuated by school officials. Together with partners from South Hadley Fire District 2 and the Massachusetts State Police K9 Explosive Detection Teams, the school was searched and found to be safe.”
