Cyclist killed at Rittenhouse Square identified as CHOP doctor Barbara Friedes

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A 30-year-old woman who hit and killed while cycling in Rittenhouse Square was identified as a doctor at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The family identified the woman as Dr. Barbara Friedes, a chief physician at the hospital.

Another person was seriously injured in the accident, which occurred at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, at the intersection of Spruce Street and 18th Street.

According to police, a 68-year-old man was driving a blue car west on Spruce Street when he struck Friedes, who was traveling west in the designated bike lane.

According to police, Friedes suffered a “severe traumatic brain injury” and was taken to Jefferson Hospital, where she died a short time later.

No charges have yet been filed in connection with the accident.
