THUMBNAIL SKETCH: HUNDRED DAYS is an exhilarating and heartbreaking, uncensored musical story about embracing uncertainty, taking a step forward, and loving like you only have 100 days left to live. Creators Abigail Benson, Shaun Bengson, and Sarah Gaucher have written the story of how the Bengsons fell in love and embraced life. The musical originally premiered at New York Theatre Workshop.

THE PLAYERS, THE PLAY AND THE PRODUCTION:

The plot of Hundred Days is pretty offbeat. In fact, I’m surprised the Bengsons would want to share their strange and intense personal story with the world. A young woman and a young man are both naive introverts who have endured traumatic teenage years. They are both estranged from family and friends, and they form an instant (and codependent) relationship with each other. The young woman is the victim of her own premonitions and magical thinking, which colors their relationship considerably.

The songs range from light to disturbing. Special thanks to musical director Theresa Quinn for making sure we were able to understand all the lyrics. My favorites were the upbeat 100 Days and the haunting dream number.

Susan Drozd’s direction is sensitive and includes sequences of mime and imaginative movement. It is a musically challenging show and the work of musical director Theresa Quinn is remarkable. All the production values ​​- costumes (Kari Drozd), set/sound (Chris Cavanagh) and, especially, lighting (Brian Cavanagh) – are excellent.

The heroine, Abigail, is played by Samantha Sugarman and she lights up the stage with her beautiful singing and alluring personality. Miss Sugarcane gave her all in this role. Starring opposite Miss Sugarcane is Nick Stevens, who brings a wry sense of humor and a relaxed, believable manner to his scenes and songs. Both Miss Sugarcane and Mr. Stevens are three-string actors: they sing, act and play guitar.

The musicians – Theresa Quinn, Anna Krempholtz, Jay Wollin and Kevin Stevens – are incredible. They each play multiple instruments, sing, act and even move the set. Bravo to all of you!

The performance by musician Anna Krempholtz was particularly impressive. It seemed like every time I watched her, she was playing a different instrument. She also did a great job accompanying herself on the flute as she sang a powerful solo. I know that sounds impossible! And she wasn’t just playing the flute, she was playing the flute with anger, in the spirit of the song. I’d never heard a flute express that emotion before. Reading the program, I see that Ms. Krempholtz is also the actress who was wonderfully funny as Blanche Du Bois in Death on a Streetcar Named Virginia Woolf. Any theater company in town is lucky to have her services.

This is a tight production of a captivating and highly original show. This is a WNY premiere with top-notch musical performances!
