Buffalo Bills to fire Sean McDermott in 2025

The Bills are in a tough spot where they have been Super Bowl contenders the last five seasons with a star quarterback in Josh Allen and 10+ wins each season, but have yet to appear in a Super Bowl.

Josh Allen isn’t going anywhere, and the Bills need to capitalize on this Super Bowl window, so what’s the next logical move?

Move on Head coach Sean McDermott.

When would the Bills fire Sean McDermott?

This would make perfect sense if Buffalo were to still face playoff struggles after the 2024-25 season. While five seasons of elite regular-season play should give you some breathing room, something needs to change now.

Josh Allen will be 29 when next season begins, and with his contract extension set to run through 2026, now is the time for the Bills to push back that Super Bowl window.

The case for keeping McDermott as head coach

If the Bills were to have another bad season without a Super Bowl appearance but still make the playoffs, Sean would have an easy reason to stay as coach. That would mean six straight seasons with 10+ wins and continuity with the organization and star quarterback. The problem is, are you willing to be mediocre in the playoffs? Every year there is an excuse for injuries, the defense didn’t hold up, Josh Allen had a rough outing, etc. While those explanations are valid, six straight years of that would not be a coincidence. The Chiefs’ 2023 Super Bowl team wasn’t the healthiest, didn’t have the best weapons, didn’t have home-field advantage, and they still won the Super Bowl.

Great teams find a way to overcome the cap, and the Bengals/Chiefs are going to dominate the AFC until the Bills get rid of Sean McDermott and give Josh Allen a chance to compete for a Super Bowl.
