Two Greene County residents face multiple felony charges after being accused of setting fire to a home in Churdan last year.

According to court documents, a fire was reported at 802 Sand Street before 5:30 a.m. on October 2. After the fire, Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office to help investigate the incident, which he believed to be suspicious.

Court documents show that during the investigation, it was determined that 27-year-old Conner Groves of Scranton and Logan Grazier, also 27, of Scranton, conspired to set fire to the home, which Groves owned at the time. According to the criminal complaint, a friend of Groves’ helped remove items from the home a day or two before the fire, and after the fire, Groves told the friend that Grazier was the one who set the fire.

Conner Groves

Court documents show that Groves said she was out of town the day of the fire, but called Grazier after her mother called her and told her there was a fire. However, the investigation found that Groves called Grazier several times before and after her mother called. Groves had also asked another person who lived in her home to burn it down, but that person refused and soon moved out. Investigators found that the fire started where Groves had told two different people she had planned to set the fire.

On October 2, a search warrant was executed on Groves’ new residence at 901 Grant Street in Scranton and items were found that the insurance company said were destroyed in the fire. The insurance company also paid Groves for the loss of the Churdan homes and damage to neighboring homes. Baggies of marijuana and drug paraphernalia were also seized during the search. Another executed search warrant dated March 12, 2024, shows that Grazier had gone through the back door of the home, which was open, to walk the dog the night before the fire. Court documents show that Grazier went back to sleep when he learned of the fire the next morning.

Groves is charged with three Class C felonies of first degree criminal damage, second degree arson and fraudulent sales practices over $10,000, two Class D felonies of insurance fraud – providing false information and conspiracy to commit a non-violent crime, an aggravated misdemeanor for her first offense of possession of marijuana and a simple misdemeanor of possession of drug paraphernalia. Grazier is charged with two Class C felonies of first degree criminal damage and second degree arson, and two Class D felonies of conspiracy to commit a non-violent crime and insurance fraud – providing false information. Both were booked into the Greene County Jail. Raccoon Valley Radio will update you with more information as it becomes official.
