Which Buffalo Bills players are poised to emerge on offense in 2024?

RBs Ray Davis and Ty Johnson

Over the final nine weeks of the 2023 season, Buffalo averaged the league’s highest rushing yards per game (154.9). Running back James Cook finished with the NFL’s fourth-most rushing yards (1,122) in his second season.

It will be interesting to see what Cook does in his third year, but it will be equally interesting to see how running backs Ray Davis and Ty Johnson are used to complement Cook. Davis was selected by Buffalo in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and Johnson played 10 games for Buffalo last season.

Johnson finished the 2023 season averaging 4.4 yards per carry. The RB is entering his second season as a Bill.

Davis joins the Bills after having a prolific final season with Kentucky in 2023. The RB had 199 carries for 1,129 rushing yards (11th (on the UK single-season list) and 14 rushing touchdowns. He finished with 21 total touchdowns on the back of seven touchdown receptions, which is a single-season record at Kentucky.

“He’s a dog, he’s a tough guy,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane said of Davis. “You watch his tape, he plays hard … he’s tough. He’ll add a little extra to the group.”

“You see him in protection, you see him with just the ball in his hands, and he’s a football player,” offensive coordinator Joe Brady said of his new RB. “You can’t get enough of him. And he brings a little bit of a different element to both the passing game and the running game, which we thought was a great addition.”

When it comes to winning, Brady knows the Bills need to be as two-dimensional as possible. With the offensive coordinator’s belief in the run game and the stats that backed it up last season, it will be interesting to see what their plan is for this season.

“We’re confident that whoever’s in the room who’s playing ball carrier is going to do a good job,” Brady said.

I think we all expect Cook to have another good season, but Davis and Johnson could have sneaky roles depending on how the offense looks under Brady.
