Heat warning today, continued sudden storms

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The ongoing drought is increasing the chance of storms. We are giving you the first warning of sudden storms, but unfortunately they will not be widespread.

TODAY

Prepare for a hot and humid day. A heat advisory is in effect for today as the heat index for inland locations will reach 105°F or higher today. Actual temperatures will reach the upper 80s on the beaches, lower 90s inland. Factoring in humidity, some locations will reach 105-108°F today.

High humidity in the region and a stationary front to the northwest mean that the threat of some sudden storms remains throughout the day and into the afternoon hours. If you get caught in one of these storms, you’ll be in luck.

REST OF THE WEEK

The persistent heat and humidity will not go away. Temperatures will rise above 30 to below 35 degrees every afternoon and the heat index will approach 38 to 41 degrees daily.

A stalled front and increased humidity create the possibility of showers and storms every day.

Once again, increased humidity and the stationary front over the Carolinas are creating a daily chance for some much-needed rain. That chance will peak at 40% on Thursday and Friday. While that’s our best chance of rain, we won’t see drought-ending rain on any day this week. We’re in such a deficit that we’d need several days of several inches of rain to end the drought for everyone.

The chance of rain will remain throughout the week.

THIS WEEKEND

Our weekend forecast is hot and humid, with highs Saturday and Sunday reaching near 90 degrees on the beaches and the mid-90s inland through Sunday. Storms are still forecast at 30% for this weekend’s afternoon schedule.

Looking ahead to the weekend, models still support expecting 1-2 inches by Sunday. We need much more than that to end the ongoing drought.
