Ohio lawmakers want protocol for scanning microchips in dead dogs and cats

Ohio lawmakers want to enact a protocol that would require dead dogs and cats found on public streets to be checked for microchips and owners to be notified of their pet’s death.

Rep. Brian Lorenz (R-Powell) co-sponsored House Bill 379 with Rep. Sara Carruthers (R-Hamilton).

“I have three dogs. I know several people who have lost animals,” Lorenz said. “It’s always a tragic thing. Unfortunately, sometimes they get hit by cars when they run away.”

Lorenz said that establishing a procedure to ease the pain of losing a pet will make the process less painful. The bill would give pet owners the opportunity to provide comfort by knowing for sure where their lost pet is.
