Once again, a United Airlines plane loses a tire during takeoff; the second within a year

Another United Airlines plane lost a wheel during takeoff, the latest in a series of incidents that led to a federal safety review of the airline earlier this year.

United Flight 1001, en route from Los Angeles to Denver on Monday, lost a wheel during takeoff from LAX shortly after 7:15 a.m. The Boeing 757-200 landed safely in Denver shortly after 10 a.m., a United Airlines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Bloomberg reported that there were no injuries among the 174 passengers and crew on board or on the ground.

“The wheel was found in Los Angeles and we are investigating what caused this event,” United Airlines said. Further details about the defective wheel were not immediately available.

A similar incident occurred in March when another plane flying overseas was diverted because it lost a wheel after takeoff. The tire came off and crashed into a parking lot, damaging several cars, USA TODAY reported.

United Airlines remains under “enhanced oversight” for reported incidents that included an engine fire, stuck rudder pedals and other missing or damaged parts that prompted the agency to launch a thorough investigation into the airline’s operations, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor told USA TODAY on Monday.

The FAA is aware of the incident in Los Angeles and will also investigate Monday’s incident.

The loss of an aircraft tire is “rare,” says aviation expert

David Evans, who is also an FAA-certified transport pilot and flight instructor, previously told USA TODAY that the loss of an aircraft tire was a “rare incident.”

“It happens from time to time, but usually at the end of the day it’s nothing special,” Evans said.
