Cameron County issues statement on shark attacks at SPI

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. has released a statement regarding the July 4 shark attacks on South Padre Island.

The press release urges beachgoers and swimmers to exercise caution when going to the beach and entering the water as there have been two shark bite incidents and two other encounters.

“The county would like to extend its thoughts and prayers to the victims and families of these extremely rare and unusual attacks,” Treviño said. “The county is working closely with the mayor.
Patrick McNulty, the City of South Padre Island and our state and federal partners should patrol the beaches and take appropriate action.”

Treviño continued, “This is a horrific event. The county will continue to provide all necessary resources to protect our families to the best of our ability. We are very grateful to our city, state and federal partners in this effort.”
