Rapist hairdresser is the first Japanese in Singapore to be caned

A Singapore A Japanese court has sentenced a Japanese man to 17.5 years in prison and 20 lashes for raping and sexually assaulting a woman in 2019, according to a court document. This is the first case of a Japanese citizen receiving corporal punishment in the city-state.

Singapore’s Supreme Court on Monday convicted 38-year-old hairdresser Ikko Kita of attacking a then 20-year-old Singaporean student who was in an intoxicated state in the early hours of December 30, 2019.

According to court documents, Kita took the unknown woman to his apartment in a taxi and had non-consensual sexual intercourse with her while filming the encounter.

He was arrested by police the same day and released on bail the next day. He was charged in a lower court in May last year and has been in custody since then.

In his verdict, presiding judge Aedit Abdullah described the attacks as “brutal and cruel” and added that, given the circumstances of the crimes, a severe sentence should be imposed on the victim, who was drunk and defenseless.

Kita had pleaded guilty to the charges.

JapanThe embassy in Singapore confirmed that Kita is the first Japanese citizen to be caned.
