Chicago man charged after ex-girlfriend calls police during argument

A Chicago man was charged with obstructing a peace officer on June 24 after Brookfield police broke up a violent argument between him and his ex-girlfriend in which both said the other struck first.

At about 6:30 a.m. that morning, Brookfield police were dispatched to the BP gas station near the intersection of Ogden and Prairie Avenues, where they met the woman and man from Chicago. The woman had called police because her ex-boyfriend would not leave her vehicle.

As officers approached the car the two were in, they could hear them yelling at each other and saw them shoving each other into the car. When police arrived, the two got out of the car and said the other one attacked them first.

An officer attempted to speak to the man in the passenger side of the car, but the man attempted to get back into the car and get something out, police said. In response, officers attempted to handcuff the man to prevent him from getting into the car. The man continued his efforts and pulled away from officers; as they pulled him back out of the car, the man and officers tripped and fell across a parking block onto the ground. After falling, the man attempted to get back up and drive off while the woman told him to stop.

According to the police report, the woman told officers that the man had mental health issues and needed to be taken to a psychiatric hospital, which the man agreed to. Once the man calmed down, officers made him sit on the ground and told him they were afraid he might take things from the car.

An officer spoke to the woman in the driver’s side of the car and learned the two had left Chicago together because she had to go to work. According to police, the woman said she was driving on Ogden Avenue when the man became “verbally aggressive” toward her. She called police after stopping at the gas station. While she was on the phone, she said, the man reached for items in the car, so she began to pick him up and told him to stop. She told him to get out of the car before he “went at her.” The woman said the man punched her in the face, pulled her hair and bit her on the forehead. Police found a small injury on the woman’s forehead.

The woman showed police the footage she had taken with her cell phone, but police said it did not show anyone hitting someone else. She then told police that she only wanted psychiatric help for her ex-boyfriend and did not want to press charges. She told police that she hit the man on the head to defend herself against his attack.

Officers who spoke to the man were told he and the woman had been arguing in the car while the woman was driving. After she stopped, the woman began punching the man in the face, at which point he pulled her hair in self-defense, he said.

“Due to conflicting statements, lack of independent witnesses and mutual combatants, it could not be determined who the attacker was,” police wrote in the report.

After police took the man to Loyola Medicine in Maywood, he was charged with obstructing an officer for “failing to comply with a lawful order not to enter the vehicle.” A court date was set for August 13.

Speeding ticket without a driver’s license

A Villa Park man was charged and his vehicle was towed by police after they caught him driving without a license.

On June 27 at approximately 5:40 p.m., a Brookfield officer on patrol was driving south on Maple Avenue when he saw a car traveling north at 45 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone. The officer turned around and stopped the car near the intersection of Maple and Shields Avenues.

After making contact with the driver, the officer asked for his driver’s license and proof of insurance, but the man was unable to provide either. He gave the officer a Puerto Rican passport and said he had never received a driver’s license before. He also said he had lived in the Chicago area since about 2013.

The officer issued the man tickets for speeding, driving without a valid license, and driving without insurance. For these violations, the officer informed the man that his car would have to be towed. The officer took the man, who was not arrested, to the police station and set a court date for August 13.

This information is from Brookfield Police Department reports from June 24 through July 1. It represents a portion of the incidents to which police responded. All individuals named in these reports have been charged with only a crime and the cases have not yet been tried.
