Mass panic at religious event in Hathras claims more than two dozen lives; 23 women and three children among the dead

In a tragic incident, several people were killed in a stampede during a religious gathering in Hathras. At least 27 people were reportedly killed and several others injured in a stampede during a religious gathering in a village in Hathras district on Tuesday, police said. Rajesh Kumar Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah, told PTI that the incident took place during a ‘satsang’ in Pulrai village.

CMO Etah, Umesh Kumar Tripathi, says, “So far, 27 bodies have arrived at the postmortem house, including 25 women and two men. Many injured people have also been admitted. More details will be given after the investigation. The main reason is stampede during a religious function.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the families of the bereaved and directed officials to take immediate relief measures at the accident site. “UP CM Yogi Adityanath has expressed his condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives in the accident in Hathras district. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He directed the district administration officials to immediately shift the injured to the hospital for proper treatment and expedite relief measures at the spot. He has directed to investigate the causes of the incident under the leadership of ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh,” UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s office posted on X.

SSP Etah mentioned that a large crowd had gathered for the event. Ashish Kumar, SHO of Sikandara Rao police station, noted that the stampede was probably due to overcrowding.
