Weather in Maryland: Warning day on Wednesday due to heat and storms

BALTIMORE– After a few very pleasant days across the region, it seems like the brutal heat and humidity are returning for a day.

Partly cloudy skies are expected overnight, with lows between 15 and 21 degrees across most of the region. Partly cloudy skies will continue through Wednesday, accompanied by a renewed increase in heat and humidity. Highs could reach record highs, with mid to high 90 degrees possible across the region. The record high at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport on Wednesday will be 99 degrees. Heat index readings above 100 degrees are expected in many locations.

A cold front will move into the area late this afternoon, likely bringing some showers and thunderstorms that will last through Wednesday night. Due to the heat and humidity, as well as some wind shear, some of the storms could be severe, with damaging wind gusts being the main danger. The possibility of isolated hail and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out, but wind damage appears to be the main danger from any storms that do occur.

The chance of rain is likely to continue into Thursday morning before easing. Skies will clear up and temperatures will drop in the afternoon. Highs on Thursday and Friday will be 27 degrees Celsius, with overnight lows dropping to 15 degrees Celsius as humidity levels drop again in the region.

The weekend will be hot and humid again, with highs around 35 degrees on Saturday and between 35 and 35 degrees on Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms are possible on both days, and there is potentially a serious threat to be aware of.

Lows at night will be back at 21 degrees. Expect pleasant temperatures again early next week.
