Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Toyota Rav4 was traveling northbound on Route 3 near the 40.2 mile marker in Braintree. The Rav4 struck a deer and was forced to stop in the right lane to assess the damage to the vehicle.

The driver and a passenger had already left the car and were on foot when a Jaguar F-PACE SUV driving in the right lane swerved onto the hard shoulder to avoid a collision with the Rav4.

The SUV hit the passenger of the Rav4 on the hard shoulder.

The driver of the Rav4, a 63-year-old man from Roxbury, was taken by ambulance to a nearby medical facility. Desrosiers was also transported with serious injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The center and right lanes of Route 3 were closed for nearly three and a half hours following the accident. Traffic was able to pass in the left lane while analysis and cleanup operations were conducted.

The crash remains under investigation.
