SALISBURY – A Rowan County man was arrested Saturday after police say he fled a traffic stop on a motorcycle and only stopped when he experienced engine problems.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. near mile marker 65 on the north side of Interstate 85. A deputy conducting traffic enforcement noticed a loud black motorcycle with bright neon wheels passing him at over 100 miles per hour, said Captain Mark McDaniel, spokesman for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy then allegedly attempted to stop the motorcycle near the North Carolina Highway 152 exit. The driver of the motorcycle accelerated to about 130 mph to escape the deputy, weaving through traffic before eventually exiting the interstate and turning right onto Julian Road, McDaniel said.

The driver was reportedly traveling along Julian Road at about 70 mph before attempting to make a right turn onto Old Concord Road. He was then forced to stop at the intersection because his motorcycle was experiencing engine problems and was arrested without incident, McDaniel said.

The driver, identified as 23-year-old Chandler Austin King, was charged with fleeing, aggressive driving and speeding. He was taken to the Rowan County Detention Center and ordered to post $20,000 bail, sheriff’s office reports show.
