Mother arrested in Daytona Beach after her child nearly drowned in bathtub

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida. – Police say a mother was arrested in Daytona Beach after her child nearly drowned in a bathtub.

Karina Mustafa, 29, was taken into custody on Sunday.

According to Daytona Beach police, the child’s father called 911 around 12:45 p.m. after finding the child unconscious in the tub.

An affidavit states that the child got dirty while playing with potted plants and an argument broke out between Mustafa and the child’s father.

Mustafa took the child into the bathroom and locked the door, the affidavit states. The father tried to get into the bathroom and the two then argued about whether they could open the door, the report says.

When Mustafa unlocked the door, the father saw the unconscious child in the tub, which was half full of water, the affidavit states.

The father performed CPR and the toddler was taken to a hospital where he is in stable condition, police said.

During an interview with police, Mustafa said she did not hold the child’s head under water for “more than a minute,” the affidavit states.

Mustafa is charged with cruelty to a child and aggravated child abuse.
