A man was struck and killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train while walking on the tracks in Bay Park early Saturday.

According to OnScene.TV, authorities were called to the area near McGraw Street and Morena Boulevard at 2 a.m. following the incident.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating. The San Diego police and fire department were also on site.

Following the incident, the tracks were temporarily closed. According to the @PacSurfliners account on X, the disruption caused some train cancellations until the closure, which affected all rail service between San Diego and Los Angeles, was expected to be lifted at 8 a.m.

It is unknown why the man was on the tracks. The train, which was heading north, was over a mile long and carried freight cars with new rolling stock.
