1 dead, 6 injured in crash on Beltway in Montgomery County, officials say – NBC4 Washington

A traffic accident that left one person dead and six others injured on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County Wednesday morning has caused delays of miles, authorities said.

All lanes of the Inner Loop of the Beltway (Interstate 495) were closed for hours due to the accident investigation between Connecticut Avenue and Georgia Avenue.

Lanes were reopened before 8 a.m., but the traffic backup on the Inner Loop was 5.5 miles long, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. Gawking delays on the Outer Loop extended to Interstate 95, authorities said.

According to Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer, three vehicles were involved in the accident shortly before 3 a.m.

At least one person was thrown from the vehicle, another was trapped and pulled from the wreckage, Piringer said.

All of the injured were treated as trauma patients, said Piringer. Further information on their condition was not initially released.

Photos from the scene of the accident show a Jeep vehicle lying on its roof next to a concrete safety wall and two demolished limousines.

The Maryland State Police are investigating. Authorities have not provided any further information about the possible cause of the accident.

Montgomery County Police diverted traffic from the Beltway before the Inner Loop reopened.
