Bobby Babich talks new role with the Buffalo Bills

After spending time with the defensive backs and linebackers, Babich is overseeing the entire defense for the first time, bringing the energy his players are accustomed to.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Joe Brady isn’t the only one entering his first offseason as coordinator.

“At this point, it’s still pretty surreal,” Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich said of his new role.

Bobby Babich, with the Bills as defensive back and linebackers coach, now oversees the entire defense as DC.

“He’s done a lot of talking here before as a linebackers coach and now he’s doing it as a defensive coordinator,” Von Miller said. “You know, he’s always been a great coach since I got here, and he’s always had really nice things to say in front of the defense and now it’s his full-time job.”

At just 40 years old, the Bills defense has seen Babich’s youthful energy over the past seven seasons. This is something defensive players are eager to see continue.

“It’s definitely a lot of energy,” Bills defensive back Cam Lewis said. “He’s very detail oriented, so you just have to bring that juice factor to it and his football IQ is the highest I’ve seen from any coach I’ve been a part of or been with. “

Sean McDermott, who called defensive plays last year in a dual role as head coach, has yet to confirm whether Babich will call plays in his first year as coordinator. We will have to wait until training camp to get an answer on this subject.

As for whether Babich is ready to take on this responsibility? He gave a passionate response.

“You’re constantly trying to prepare yourself when you get into this position, but until you actually do something… you’re never ready,” Babich said. “I don’t have the ego to sit here and say: I’m ready.”

Babich added: “I’m vulnerable enough to say that I’m as prepared as I can be and I’m going to continue to learn every day, every step of this process. So I’m going to continue to learn. I’m going to make mistakes no matter what. that this job entails, just as players make mistakes, as anyone new to a position makes mistakes.

Regardless, Babich has only one goal in mind as he assumes his new role.

“I’m as prepared as I can be. I have a great mentor upstairs that I’ve had for many years that I can lean on. I’m really, really, really excited about this opportunity, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help this team win a Super Bowl…I just want to be a part of something special here in Buffalo.”
