8 ON YOUR SITE CONSUMER WARNING: Cucumbers recalled in Alabama and other states

8 ON YOUR SIDE, CONSUMER ALERT: Cucumbers are being recalled in 14 states, including Alabama, due to health concerns.

Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. of Delray, Florida, is recalling cucumbers shipped to retail stores and foodservice distribution centers between May 17 and May 21 due to possible salmonella contamination.

The recall came after the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture announced that a product sample tested positive for salmonella.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, vomiting and stomach cramps. The effects can be more severe in young people, the elderly and people with other health problems.

The cucumbers were delivered to wholesalers and distributors in the following states, except Alabama: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The hope is that the problem was identified before the cucumbers hit grocery stores, but if you’ve recently purchased cucumbers, you may want to check to be sure.
