Hazardous materials investigation initiated after accident involving truck loaded with pool chemicals on SR-23

Due to a hazardous materials investigation, several lanes on SR-23 were closed for an extended period of time Saturday afternoon after a truck loaded with pool chemicals crashed.

The accident occurred just before 12:40 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway near N. Hillcrest Drive and Janss Road when a Toyota Tundra loaded with chemicals collided with two other cars, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the truck’s bed was badly damaged when it came to a stop in the middle of the highway on Saturday. Several overturned barrels and bottles were scattered on the road.

CHP officers closed the road for hours while Hazardous Materials Investigators were called to the scene.

No injuries were reported in the accident.

At around 2:45 p.m., one lane was reopened, CHP officials said.
