Slightly drier air moves in, but temperatures remain hot

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – The cold front that passed through yesterday and shifted our winds to the east and southeast will have a significant impact on our weather. High pressure is building behind the front and some drier air will move in. As a result, the chance of rain today will be less than half of what was forecast yesterday. Temperatures will remain near record highs, however. Almost all of next week will be very hot and temperatures will be well above normal.

Today marks the start of the 2024 hurricane season. By all standards, it looks like a busy season, with activity well above normal tropical levels. The waters in the Atlantic are very warm; temperatures are near August levels. The La Niña weather phenomenon is forecast to become a significant weather driver through August, as the hurricane season reaches its most active phase. La Niña has been shown to have a positive influence on the development of hurricanes in the Atlantic. The African monsoon, which produces the seeds of hurricanes during the summer months, is also forecast to be active, and the Saharan dust layer is likely to suppress thunderstorms over the Atlantic less than in several years past. All of this means that now is the time to prepare. Check insurance, develop a family plan for dealing with storms, put together a hurricane supply kit, check window shutters, and read hurricane advisories.
