Man dies in crash after semi-trailer loses control and jumps over I-96 construction barrier

A driver died early Friday when he collided with a semi-trailer that had jumped a guardrail on I-96 near Lansing.

According to Michigan State Police, a 63-year-old Ann Arbor man was driving a semi-truck in the right lane of the westbound side of the highway near Creyts when he veered onto the shoulder around 2 a.m. While attempting to get back into the lane, he oversteered and lost control.

According to police, the truck struck a construction barrier and then jumped the wall onto the east side of the highway. A 31-year-old Mason man driving a Buick Envista struck the truck on the east side of the highway and was killed.

Another driver, a 21-year-old man from Lansing in a Chevrolet Malibu, also crashed when he attempted to avoid the truck and struck a tree. He sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The truck driver was taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the accident.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a role in the accident, police said. Investigators are still trying to determine what happened.
