Elmhurst police attack man with knife at Portillo’s

A man attacked his girlfriend at a Portillo’s on the north side of the Elmhurst Crossing shopping center Wednesday morning, according to a press release from Elmhurst Police.

The man and woman were part of a cleaning crew working at the restaurant at 155 S. IL Route 83 in Elmhurst.

Elmhurst police, along with neighboring police departments and the DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team, responded to a call around 5:30 a.m. after the victim and another woman who was working on the cleaning crew fled the restaurant and hit a drive-by Drivers had alerted.

There, the officers engaged in an almost three-hour altercation with the 32-year-old man. According to the police, the officers entered the restaurant at around 8:30 a.m. and found the man lying on the floor with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds.

Paramedics later took the man, whose condition was unknown, to a hospital. According to police, the victim showed signs of assault and suffered minor injuries.

The Elmhurst Shopping Center, which was closed during the incident, reopened at 9:30 a.m., while Portillo’s remained closed while evidence technicians examine the crime scene.
