Man gets life sentence for raping student in Natore

A court in Natore on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a case involving the rape of an eighth-grader in Lalpur upazila of the district about four years ago.

Natore Women and Children Repression and Prevention Tribunal Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim also sentenced the accused to 14 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Tk 30,000 under another section of the relevant law, court prosecutor Anisur Rahman said.

The convict is Sabbir, a resident of Durduria village under the upazila.

The court also acquitted the two accused, Abul Mannan and Muktar Hossain, of the charges as the allegations against them were found to be untrue.

According to the file, Sabbir and his cohorts picked up the girl from the upazila village of Aumarpur and raped her on November 20, 2020 after she rejected his love proposal.

Later, the victim’s father lodged a complaint against Sabbir and others at the local police station.

On April 5 of the following year, police filed charges against the defendant.

After the trial concluded, the court announced the verdict in the presence of the three accused, including Sabbir.
