Bodycam shows a man arrested after police say he tracked a teenager using Apple AirTag

New video shows the arrest of a man accused of stalking a teenager by allegedly placing an Apple AirTag on his car. “Hands behind your back. “Palms together like you’re praying,” an officer said to the defendant in the body camera video. “Can I just tell you now? Like I wouldn’t talk to a detective without my lawyer,” 18-year-old John Cain said to the officer in the video. Body camera video shows Cain being taken into custody. He is accused of taping an Apple AirTag under a teenager’s car. According to the police report, on February 11, the victim received a notification on his phone that an Apple AirTag was sharing his location. The teenager searched the car and found the AirTag attached under the car. The victim contacted Green Township police. Hours later, the victim’s mother said her car was smashed. An investigation led to an arrest warrant for Cain on May 5, according to Green Township police. In the video, Cain can be seen being fingerprinted and taken to the Green Township Police Department for questioning. “So do you have any idea why we’re here today,” the detective asked Cain. “No, and I will plead my fifth man and wait for my lawyer,” Cain said. Cain was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center and charged with criminal harm/endangerment and menacing stalking. We spoke to the teenage victim’s mother earlier this week. “Someone wanted my son,” said the victim’s mother. She offered this advice to parents: “This was all very random, and just make sure you know where your children are and protect them with everything you can,” the victim’s mother said. “I’ve had several people tell me this happened to them,” said cybersecurity expert Dave Hatter. “So do you have any idea why we’re here today,” the detective asked Cain.

“No, and I’m going to file my fifth claim and wait for my lawyer,” Cain said.

Cain was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center and charged with criminal harm/endangerment and menacing stalking.

We spoke to the teenage victim’s mother earlier this week.

“Someone wanted my son,” said the victim’s mother.

She gave this advice to parents.

“It was all very arbitrary. “Just make sure you know where your children are and protect them with everything you can,” said the victim’s mother.

“Several people have told me this happened to them,” said cybersecurity expert Dave Hatter.

Hatter says it’s a common technology, but it can be used for the wrong reasons.

“If someone has nefarious intent to stalk you, this is an easy way to do it,” Hatter said.

Hatter says there are signs an AirTag could be tracking you.

“If you get a notification on your phone that you’re being tracked, you should take a closer look at it because it’s probably an AirTag,” Hatter said.

Cain’s attorney said his client has pleaded not guilty in the case. His next court date is scheduled for June 26.
