Fourth wettest July on record, even more rain today – 95.5 WSB

There are only a few days left in July 2024, but already the Atlanta area has accumulated 12.70 inches of rain, nearly three times the average amount of rainfall for the month of July.

Nearly a quarter of that rain fell on Sunday alone, with nearly 3.5 inches of rain recorded at the Atlanta airport! That set a new daily rainfall record for the area; the previous record for maximum daily rainfall for July 28 was 3.07 inches, set in 1887.

Initially, the rain was beneficial, coming just after an unusually warm and dry June that triggered a flash drought in northern Georgia.

The Athens area is also experiencing wetter than average conditions, although rain has not been as heavy as in the Atlanta area.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast for this afternoon and evening, and flash flooding could be a concern with some of the slower moving showers.

The animation below illustrates the Futurecast radar for this afternoon and evening.

Be prepared for any flash flood warning and remember: Never attempt to walk or drive through flood waters.
