1 person dies in jet truck accident at Michigan air show

According to police, one person was killed in an accident during the “pyrotechnic portion” of an air show in Michigan.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Battle Creek Field of Flight air show and balloon festival held at Battle Creek Executive Airport.

Chris Darnell, 40, died while driving a racing truck called the Shockwave Jet Truck during the air show, police said Saturday night. The accident is currently under investigation.

Dramatic video taken by air show visitors showed the truck colliding with two planes on the runway before the crash. A small fire can be seen behind the truck as the vehicle skids past a large fireball and crashes.

“Oh man, we have an incident with our Shockwave out here at the Air Show Center,” the announcer is heard saying after the accident.

Battle Creek fire and police departments as well as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) arrived at the scene of the accident, police said.

The police have not released any further information in the course of the investigation.

The remainder of Saturday’s air show was canceled “out of respect for the incident,” Battle Creek Field of Flight said in a statement. Saturday night’s activities were scheduled to continue at the festival, which runs through Monday.

Shockwave, a custom-built race truck, is owned by Darnell Racing Enterprises, based in Springfield, Missouri. ABC News has reached out to the company for comment.

The truck, which featured three flame-spewing jet engines, could travel over 350 miles per hour, according to its owners, and frequently appeared at air shows and drag racing exhibitions across the country.

According to a biography on the Darnell Racing website, Darnell has been involved in motorsports “his entire life” and worked with his father in the industry.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Neal Darnell described his son as a “family man” who leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

“We lost our youngest son Chris in an accident while doing what he loved: performing with Shockwave,” wrote Neal Darnell. “Chris loved life and his huge airshow and drag racing family so much.”
