Widespread outages disrupt flights at Atlanta airport

This is what we know.

ATLANTA — Flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were grounded Friday following a widespread computer outage; other systems were also impacted.

4 am | Several airlines have issued statements saying the CrowdStrike outage is impacting their systems. Crowds are forming at Atlanta’s airport, and passengers say their airline apps are also not updating to tell them their flights have been delayed or canceled.

Besides airlines, other technical systems around the world are experiencing problems, including bank ATMs, television stations, warehouses, etc.

According to the New York Times, representatives for CrowdStrike did not respond to a request for comment Friday. Microsoft also declined to comment. Microsoft said the issue affected multiple customer systems in the central United States.

About the computer failure

Microsoft users including banks and airlines experienced widespread outages on Friday, shortly after Microsoft began troubleshooting issues affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services. American Airlines and other carriers including United and Delta suspended flights due to a technical issue with CrowdStrike. The FAA confirmed that Allegiant flights were also grounded. DownDetector reported outages at Visa, ADT, Amazon and various airlines. The disruptions affected British airlines, railways and TV stations, with Ryanair advising people to arrive at the airport early. Australian airports saw long queues due to failed check-in services, and major delays were reported at major European airports including Schiphol and Berlin. The outages also impacted Australian banks, phone providers and news media, with some journalists broadcasting from dark offices due to computer outages. New Zealand banks ASB and Kiwibank also reported service disruptions.
