“The worst place you could be”

You don’t pull on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit in the wind, you don’t remove the mask from that old lone ranger and you don’t take on the Bills mafia.

Apparently, Jonnu Smith didn’t learn that last lesson.

Smith, 28, joined the Miami Dolphins this offseason on a two-year, $8.4 million contract. In one of his first actions as a member of the Dolphins, the tight end took aim at Buffalo Bills fans, chicken wings and the city itself. During an appearance on The Dive Bar Podcast, Smith wasted no time in criticizing all things Buffalo.

“That’s why the fans hate so much because they want to be here (in Miami),” Smith said. “Have you ever been to Buffalo? Oh, my God, man,” Smith said. “I don’t know how these guys do it. I don’t know how they did it. I don’t know how they did it, man. To come from anywhere in the country, man, and go to Buffalo. That’s probably the worst place you can be.”

After calling fans haters and criticizing Buffalo, Smith took aim at chicken wings, a food famous for its Buffalo roots.

“And Buffalo wings aren’t even good,” Smith added. “They’re not even good. I’m Buffalo. I’m theirs. Every single type of punch is against Buffalo.”

You can watch the podcast clip below.

Smith will play for his fourth team in five seasons in 2024. After playing his first four seasons with the Tennessee Titans (2017-20), Smith had short stints with the New England Patriots (2021-22) and Atlanta Falcons (2023). In Atlanta, Smith set career highs in receptions (50) and receiving yards (582).

Smith had plenty to say off the field about Buffalo, but time will tell if he’ll be a factor on the field this season as the Dolphins attempt to knock the Bills off their AFC East championship pedestal. That certainly seems unlikely given his past performance against Buffalo. In six regular-season games against the Bills, Smith caught just nine passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t have a single reception in a playoff game against the Bills as a member of the Patriots in 2021.
