Sexual harassment: GTU professor accuses director of sexual harassment | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: A professor of the School of Engineering and Technology of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has filed a sexual harassment complaint against the director of the department. The accused, Professor SD Panchal, held various senior positions in the university, including acting vice-chancellor, member of the governing body, member of the academic council and university registrar. The complaint states that Panchal used to send her numerous text messages daily, including through apps like Telegram, suggesting that she must meet him at a hotel to complete her PhD. GTU registrar KN Kher, however, told TOI that he had not received any such complaint. In a related incident, Professor Mukesh Khatik of the sociology department of Gujarat University was recently dismissed after being found guilty of similar allegations made by another professor. In her complaint, the GTU professor alleged that Panchal harassed her at the workplace, causing her difficulties in her work and her PhD. He allegedly visited her when she was alone in her cubicle, discussed departmental or personal matters with her, and tried to gain her trust by claiming that he was lonely and suicidal. The professor was initially suspicious of his advances and decided to remain silent as she was still working on her PhD. However, during the final stages of her PhD, Panchal’s behavior escalated. She claims that he tried to sexually harass her in 2022, but she firmly rejected his advances. He started blackmailing her, stalking her, and threatening to ruin her career.
