On Friday at approximately 4:33 p.m., Saline County 911 received multiple reports of a shooting incident in the 1200 block of Crestline Drive in Crete. Crete police officers and Saline County officials responded and arrived within minutes. As they approached the scene, officers could still hear gunshots. They found multiple victims inside a home on Crestline Drive and determined the shots were coming from a home across the street.

Officers and first responders on the scene moved the victims to safety so they could be transported for treatment. There were seven gunshot victims in total. Six were initially identified and taken to Crete Area Medical Center. The seventh realized he had been hit hours later and was taken to the hospital.

Out of respect for privacy, NSP will not release the names of the victims. Four children between the ages of 3 and 10 were injured in the shooting. Three adults between the ages of 22 and 43 were injured.

As of early Saturday afternoon, four patients had been treated and released from area hospitals. Three victims remain hospitalized. Two of the victims are at Children’s Hospital in Omaha and one is at Bryan Health West Campus in Lincoln. All injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

While the victims were being recovered from the crime scene, additional emergency personnel, including officers and police officers, set up a security ring around the crime scene. The NSP SWAT team was activated.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., the SWAT team entered the home where the shots were fired, 1810 Parkland Street, and found the resident dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The SWAT team located a shotgun near the suspect. The suspect was identified as Billy Booth, 74, of Crete.

NSP investigators were then able to begin examining the crime scene. Investigators found another firearm inside the home, but believe the shotgun was the only weapon used in the shooting. Preliminary investigations indicate that all of the shots Booth fired came from inside his home.

There were about 15 people in the victims’ home at the time of the shooting. Most of the victims were in the yard, but at least one victim was hit inside the home on Crestline Drive.

The Nebraska State Patrol, Crete Police Department and Saline County Sheriff would like to thank the fire and rescue teams from Crete, Wilber, Dorchester, Pleasant Dale and SW Rural for their quick response, as well as Crete Area Medical Center, Bryan Health and Children’s Hospital for treating the victims.

The investigations are still ongoing.
