Two dead, one missing after landslide in Switzerland, police say

Two people died and a third person is missing on Sunday after heavy thunderstorms caused a landslide in the southern Swiss canton of Ticino, police said.

Police in the Italian-speaking Alpine canton said the landslide occurred early Sunday on a hill in the remote Maggia Valley.

A bridge downstream from the disaster area was under water, hampering rescue efforts, they added.

Two bodies recovered in the Fontana valley are currently being identified.

Authorities evacuated campsites along the Maggia River and there were disruptions to telecommunications and electricity supplies, the police statement said.
